Manchester City reached the Carabao Cup quarter-finals after overcoming Brighton on penalties following a 1-1 draw in normal time.

City won the shootout 4-3, with substitute goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli making the crucial difference.

Brighton took the lead in the 30th minute through Ivory Coast midfielder Malick Yalcouye, but Mateo Kovacic equalised for the holders 10 minutes later.

Kovacic then missed the fourth penalty for Manchester City. Brighton also failed to convert their final two attempts, with Yasin Ayari and Lewis Dunk both missing as City secured their place in the last eight.

Manchester City are the holders of the competition after beating Arsenal by two goals in last season’s final.

Gianluigi Donnarumma, Erling Haaland, Ruben Dias, Josko Gvardiol and Matheus Nunes were absent for City’s match against Brighton.

Bournemouth maintain scoring streak

Bournemouth also progressed to the quarter-finals with a 3-0 victory over Aston.

The result marked Bournemouth’s third successive win by a three-goal margin. They had previously recorded 3-0 victories against Milan in the Europa League and Manchester United in the Premier League before repeating the scoreline against Aston.

Crystal Palace advanced with a 1-0 win over Fulham, while Sunderland beat Brentford 3-2.

Arsenal were eliminated from the competition in the last 16 on Tuesday, losing on penalties to fourth-tier side Fleetwood Town.
