Agostinho Mabululu sends holders Mamelodi Sundowns out of CAF Champions League

Mamelodi Sundowns were eliminated from the CAF Champions League after being held to a 1-1 draw by Angola’s Wiliete in the second leg of their last-32 tie.

The holders progressed no further after the first meeting ended goalless, with Wiliete advancing on the away-goals rule.

Tashreeq Matthews gave Mamelodi Sundowns the lead in the 11th minute, striking from outside the penalty area. His effort took a deflection off a Wiliete defender before finding the net.

Wiliete responded shortly after half-time through Agostinho Mabululu, who capitalised on an error by the South African side’s defence. The Angolan forward went through one-on-one with the goalkeeper and finished to level the match in the 49th minute.

The result brought an unexpectedly early end to Mamelodi Sundowns’ title defence. It is the first time since 2015 that the South African club have failed to reach the group stage of the CAF Champions League.

Mabululu previously played for Egyptian club Al Ittihad Alexandria from summer 2021 until summer 2024. He returned to the club in January 2026 and left again in summer 2026.

Mamelodi Sundowns won the CAF Champions League last season after beating Morocco’s AS FAR 2-1 on aggregate.

Egyptian clubs’ last-32 ties

Egypt are represented in the competition by Zamalek and Pyramids.

Zamalek will play APR of Rwanda at Cairo Stadium on Saturday, having won the first leg 1-0.

Pyramids face Al-Merrikh Bentiu after securing a 1-0 victory in the opening match at Juba Stadium in South Sudan.

Elsewhere, South African side Orlando Pirates booked their place in the group stage with ease, completing a 5-0 aggregate victory over African Stars across the two legs.
