Michael Carrick’s immediate future at Manchester United could be decided by Sunday’s Premier League meeting with Bournemouth, with Julian Nagelsmann emerging as a leading candidate to replace him if the club opts to make a managerial change.
United maintain that they continue to support Carrick, but the former Germany and Bayern Munich manager is reportedly interested in taking charge at Old Trafford should the club decide to act. The Telegraph Sport says Nagelsmann is among the strongest contenders for the position.
Carrick’s side have won only two of their 11 matches in all competitions this season and are without a victory in their past seven games. Pressure increased significantly after a damaging 4-1 defeat away to Como in the Champions League.
That result was followed by criticism from United captain Bruno Fernandes, who questioned the tactics being used by Carrick and his assistant, Steve Holland. There is also growing frustration at the team’s lack of intensity and pressing.
Sunday’s fixture against Bournemouth at Old Trafford is therefore viewed as potentially decisive for Carrick’s short-term prospects. United have not beaten Bournemouth for more than three years, while Bournemouth recorded their first league victory of the season last week under Marco Rose.
There is a feeling among sources, according to the report, that United would need a bigger name and a stronger personality if the club decided to dismiss Carrick. However, there are also arguments for allowing him more time, at least until the next international break in mid-November, in the hope that he can reverse the team’s fortunes.
The pressure on Carrick is being driven not only by the poor results but also by concerns over the team’s approach under him and Holland. Fernandes’ comments have added to the scrutiny surrounding the coaching staff as United attempt to restore balance to a troubled campaign.
Nagelsmann is currently available after leaving his role as Germany manager following the country’s disappointing participation in the World Cup this summer. His availability means United would have a prominent alternative if they conclude that Carrick can no longer turn the situation around.
For now, the club’s public position remains that Carrick has its backing. But with United struggling for wins, facing criticism over their performances and preparing to meet a Bournemouth side they have failed to defeat in more than three years, the Old Trafford game has taken on added importance.
