Former Real Madrid player Predrag Mijatovic says Vinicius Junior needs time and support to recover his form after a difficult spell with the club this season.

The Brazil forward has faced sustained criticism over a noticeable drop in performance and will also serve a four-match La Liga suspension after being sent off against Villarreal.

“I miss a little of Vinicius, and I am convinced he will recover,” Mijatovic said on the El Larguero programme. “We have to give him some time and not put too much pressure on him.”

Mijatovic also referred to the disappointment shown by Vinicius when he left the pitch during Real Madrid’s 4-1 Champions League win over Leipzig on Wednesday.

Vinicius was substituted in the 70th minute and appeared frustrated after being replaced by Diomande. Mijatovic said the presence of another player capable of influencing a match should not be interpreted as evidence that Vinicius has been surpassed.

“With Diomande, we have a player who can make a difference, but that does not mean he is better than Vinicius,” Mijatovic said. “In this situation, Vinicius can easily recover his best level.

“I do not think there is any need to rush. We have to wait, and his best days will certainly come.”

Mijatovic’s assessment is in line with the message delivered by Kylian Mbappe after the Leipzig match. The France forward said it was understandable that Vinicius had been upset because of his desire to contribute to the team and its supporters.

“It is good that Vinicius is sad because he wants to give a lot to the team and the fans,” Mbappe said. “He has to remain calm and be proud of himself. He is a great player with enormous talent.”

Mijatovic identified Jude Bellingham and Thibaut Courtois as the two Real Madrid players who impressed him most against Leipzig.

“Bellingham is producing excellent performances and playing extremely well,” he said. “He is a key player for the team. He gives a lot of confidence, and Mourinho relies on him heavily because the players admire him. He always gives his best.”

Mijatovic was equally emphatic in his praise of Courtois, describing the Belgium goalkeeper as the best in the world.

“Courtois is the best goalkeeper in the world, not only this year but in previous years as well,” he said. “He has enormous confidence, and his saves are no less important than the goals or attacking moves created by his team-mates.

“The sense of security he provides is essential for any major team.”
