Inter complete remarkable comeback against Napoli with all five goals after the break

Inter came from two goals behind to beat Napoli 3-2 in a remarkable Serie A comeback, with all five goals arriving in the second half.

Matteo Politano and Rasmus Højlund put Napoli in control shortly after half-time, but Lautaro Martinez scored twice and Marcus Thuram added another as Inter turned the match around.

The victory keeps Inter’s perfect record intact after three league matches. They had already beaten Monza and Cagliari before completing their comeback against Napoli.

For Napoli, the defeat was a second successive loss after they were beaten 2-1 by Como in their previous match. They remain on three points in 10th place, while Inter sit at the top of the table with nine points, although several teams could draw level if they win their games.

Politano opened the scoring in the 50th minute when he finished into an unguarded net. Three minutes later, Højlund extended Napoli’s advantage with a powerful low drive from outside the penalty area.

Inter responded quickly. Martinez reduced the deficit in the 56th minute, turning home after a cross from Federico Dimarco had reached him in front of goal.

The comeback was completed in the 82nd minute when Thuram headed in a cross from Carlos Augusto to make it 2-2.

Martinez then delivered the winning moment in the first minute of stoppage time, scoring from inside the six-yard box to give Inter all three points.

The result also moved Inter captain Martinez level with Stefano Nyers as the club’s joint third-highest scorer on 133 goals.

Giuseppe Meazza leads Inter’s all-time scoring chart with 197 goals, followed by Benito Lorenzi on 138.

It was the first time in their history that Inter had beaten Napoli after falling two goals behind.

The dramatic nature of the victory reflects Inter’s long-standing nickname, “Pazza Inter”, meaning “Crazy Inter”. The club’s official song once carried the same name, inspired by the unusual scenarios in which the team secured victories, before former Inter manager Antonio Conte decided to remove it.

Despite Napoli’s strong start after the interval, Inter’s late response produced an extraordinary conclusion to a match in which the score changed five times in the second half. Martinez’s second goal completed the turnaround and preserved Inter’s 100% start to the campaign.
