Morocco star Azzedine Ounahi favors Ajax move as Girona exit looms
Moroccan international Azzedine Ounahi is expected to leave Girona before the end of the summer transfer window, with Ajax Amsterdam currently emerging as the midfielder’s preferred destination.
Ounahi has attracted interest from several clubs following his spell in Spain, but the Dutch giants appear to have gained an advantage because of the player’s own preference.
According to reports, Ajax is currently the most appealing option for the Moroccan, despite approaches and interest from other clubs. His preference could become an important factor as negotiations over his future develop.
One of the main attractions of a move to Amsterdam is the possibility of working again with Michel Sanchez. The French coach managed Ounahi at Girona last season before taking charge of Ajax, meaning the midfielder already has experience working within his system.
A reunion with Sanchez could therefore provide Ounahi with an environment he knows, while also giving him the opportunity to continue his career at a club with a strong reputation for developing technically gifted players.
Ajax, however, are not the only club interested in securing the Moroccan’s services.
Hull City have also shown interest in the midfielder, while clubs from the Saudi Professional League are monitoring his situation. The competition means Ounahi has several alternatives available should a move to Ajax fail to materialise.
Despite the interest elsewhere, the player’s preference currently gives Ajax an advantage in the race.
Ounahi’s situation at Girona has also added to speculation that his departure could be imminent. Spanish reports indicate that he was left out of the squad for Girona’s recent meeting with Leganes.
His absence has increased uncertainty surrounding his position at the club, particularly with the transfer window still open and several teams showing an interest in his signature.
The Moroccan midfielder joined Girona looking to establish himself in Spanish football, but his future now appears to be heading towards a new chapter.
For Ajax, bringing Ounahi to the Netherlands would provide another technically capable midfielder, while for the player, the move could offer the chance to work under a familiar coach and take on a fresh challenge.
With interest from England and Saudi Arabia also on the table, the coming days could be decisive in determining where Ounahi continues his career.
For now, Ajax remain the destination most attractive to the Moroccan, with his desire to reunite with Sanchez potentially playing a major role in the final outcome.
