Yan Diomande became the youngest African player to score and provide an assist in a single UEFA Champions League match for more than 23 years as Real Madrid defeated RB Leipzig 4-1 at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday.
The 19-year-old Ivory Coast forward made an immediate impact after coming on in the 70th minute against his former club. He set up Kylian Mbappe for Real Madrid’s third goal in the 83rd minute before completing the scoring himself four minutes later.
Diomande’s finish came from inside the penalty area, where he struck the ball powerfully to cap a brief but highly influential appearance for the Spanish side.
According to Opta, Diomande is the youngest African player to score and assist in the same Champions League game since Obafemi Martins achieved the feat for Internazionale against Arsenal in September 2003.
His performance came at an important moment for Real Madrid, who now turn their attention to a crucial La Liga fixture against Barcelona on Sunday.
The match will be played at Spotify Camp Nou, with Barcelona currently leading the Spanish league with 27 points. Real Madrid sit third on 21 points after suffering two domestic defeats this season.
They were beaten 1-0 by Real Betis and lost 2-1 to Atletico de Madrid, leaving them six points behind their nearest rivals ahead of the latest meeting between the two clubs.
Diomande’s contribution against Leipzig provided Real Madrid with a significant boost before that fixture, while also marking a personal milestone for the former RB Leipzig player.
His goal and assist also helped complete a convincing win for Real Madrid in the third round of the European competition.
