Manchester United determined to keep captain Bruno Fernandes this summer
Manchester United will reject any offers for captain Bruno Fernandes before the summer transfer window closes next month, according to the BBC, despite interest from several European clubs.
Galatasaray, Juventus and AC Milan have all been linked with a move for the 31-year-old midfielder in recent days. The three clubs are understood to be considering whether to submit formal bids to Manchester United in an attempt to establish whether the club would be willing to part with its captain.
However, Manchester United’s position is that Fernandes is not available during the current transfer window. The club intends to keep the Portugal international, while the player himself also prefers to remain at Old Trafford.
Galatasaray had been considering an offer that could have reached a total value of 50m euros, which is approximately £42.7m, according to information obtained by the BBC.
Fernandes has one year remaining on his current Manchester United contract, although the agreement includes an option to extend it for a further season. That contractual situation has contributed to speculation about his future, but there is no indication that the club is prepared to allow him to leave before the transfer deadline next month.
The midfielder has been Manchester United’s captain and remains a central figure for the club despite the uncertainty surrounding his long-term contract. His preference to continue with the team is matched by Manchester United’s determination to retain him.
Fernandes set a record during the previous season by registering more assists than any other player in a single Premier League campaign. He finished the season with nine goals and 22 assists in 37 appearances for Manchester United.
Those figures have added to his value and help explain the interest from Galatasaray, Juventus and AC Milan. Nevertheless, Manchester United’s current stance is clear: the club will not approve Fernandes’ departure during this summer’s transfer period, regardless of whether an offer arrives from one of the interested sides.
The possibility of a move has therefore been raised by outside interest rather than by a decision from the player or Manchester United. Fernandes wants to stay, and the club is committed to keeping its captain as it prepares for the close of the transfer window.
