Cagliari’s Yael Trepy receives intensive care after Porto Cervo pool emergency
Cagliari midfielder Yael Trepy is in a medically induced coma after nearly drowning in a swimming pool in Porto Cervo during a team break.
The 20-year-old French player was spending a day off with members of the squad after starting Cagliari’s Coppa Italia match against Arezzo on Friday. The team had been given two days’ rest before the incident occurred over the weekend.
According to initial reports published by Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, Trepy was caught off guard by a sudden change in the depth of the pool. He was reportedly not a strong swimmer and experienced severe breathing difficulties before losing consciousness.
He was rescued quickly and taken by helicopter to Sassari hospital, where he was placed on a ventilator.
A chest CT scan showed a significant amount of fluid in Trepy’s lungs, making it difficult for him to exchange oxygen. Doctors subsequently placed him in an induced coma in the intensive care unit, with the aim of limiting further distress and allowing him to receive the necessary treatment.
Cagliari said it was maintaining close contact with both the hospital and Trepy’s family while monitoring his condition.
The club said: “The club is in constant contact with the healthcare facility and the player’s family and is closely following the development of his condition.”
It added: “At this time, the club sends its warmest wishes to Yael and his family, asks that their privacy be respected, and will provide any updates as soon as they become available.”
Cagliari also posted a message of support on social media, writing: “Forza Yael, siamo tutti con te ❤️💙” meaning “Come on Yael, we are all with you.”
The incident has cast a shadow over the club’s preparations for the start of the league campaign. Cagliari are scheduled to resume training today as they prepare to travel for their opening league match against Parma.
Trepy had featured from the start in the cup fixture against Arezzo before the squad’s scheduled break. The pool accident then left the club facing a serious medical concern involving one of its young players, with Cagliari awaiting further information from the hospital and the player’s family.
