Tai Sodje: Anglo-Nigerian striker joins Walsall from Buxton on permanent deal

Walsall have signed Anglo-Nigerian centre-forward Tai Sodje from Buxton on a permanent deal. The 22-year-old has agreed a contract with the League Two club running until 30 June 2028.

Sodje moves to the Midlands after a prolific spell in the National League North, where he scored 11 goals in 21 appearances for Buxton. His form in non-league football has earned him a return to the EFL, with Walsall adding a right-footed striker who has operated consistently through the middle.

Born in Sheffield in September 2003, Sodje represents both England and Nigeria at nationality level and stands at 1.79m. Before joining Buxton in 2025, he developed in Manchester City’s academy system, progressing from youth level to the club’s Under-18 and Under-23 squads.

Sodje built his reputation in age-group football with City, hitting 19 goals in 27 U18 Premier League games and featuring in the Premier League 2, UEFA Youth League, FA Youth Cup and FA Cup. Across those competitions he produced regular contributions, including a goal in the FA Cup and another in the UEFA Youth League.

His time at Manchester City also brought team honours, winning the U21 Premier League twice and lifting the English U18 league title in back-to-back seasons. That youth record, combined with his efficiency in front of goal at Buxton, has now been rewarded with a long-term deal at Bescot Stadium.

Sodje’s move from Buxton to Walsall is effective immediately, with the forward registered as a permanent signing until the summer of 2028.
