Jean-Philippe Gbamin uncertain over FC Metz future

Jean-Philippe Gbamin has said he is considering all options regarding his future as his contract with FC Metz approaches its end, with the defender attracting interest from other clubs while discussions over a possible extension continue.

Metz, who currently sit 18th in Ligue 1, are facing a difficult campaign and are preparing for the likelihood of relegation to Ligue 2.

The club’s struggles have already triggered speculation over the futures of several players, with squad changes expected in the summer.

One departure already close to being confirmed is that of Koffi Kouao, while Gbamin’s situation remains unresolved.

The Ivorian defender joined Metz last summer from FC Zürich and is now in the final months of his contract, leaving his long-term future unclear.

Speaking on the Graoully Mag programme on Thursday, the 30-year-old suggested he is open to staying in Metz but confirmed that negotiations are ongoing. He also acknowledged that other clubs have shown interest in securing his services.

Frédéric (Arpinon) made the initial contact with me. We’ll see how things go between now and the end of the season, then we’ll sit down and discuss what happens next.

Gbamin also revealed that he is weighing up several options as he considers the next step in his career, taking into account both sporting ambitions and personal considerations.

Yes, there have been clubs that have come knocking, of course. Everything deserves careful consideration.

I’m 30 years old, I have to think about the future and my family. Everything will depend on the project and the length of the contract offered.

With his contract set to expire, Gbamin is expected to prioritise a move that offers regular playing time and a clear sporting project, whether that is at Metz or elsewhere.

The former Everton FC midfielder remains a valued presence in the squad despite the club’s difficult season, and his experience is seen as an asset as Metz attempt to manage the final stretch of the campaign.

His current market value is estimated at around €2 million, and he is believed to earn in the region of €1.64 million per year.

As the season draws to a close, both player and club are expected to make a final decision on whether their paths continue or diverge.
