Harry Kane made Champions League history in an unusual way as Bayern Munich drew 2-2 with Arsenal in the third round of the league phase on Wednesday evening.
The Bayern Munich striker became the first player to score, provide an assist and take a goal kick in the same Champions League match since detailed data collection for the competition began in the 2003-04 season, according to statistics provider Opta.
Kane’s contribution went well beyond scoring Bayern’s second goal from the penalty spot. He also created the opening goal for Alphonso Davies with a precise through ball, helping the German side twice find the net against Arsenal.
The England international then took a goal kick himself, an uncommon role for a forward. The decision launched a dangerous Bayern attack which almost led to another goal.
The draw kept Bayern Munich and Arsenal level after an entertaining contest, while Kane’s performance gave him a place in Champions League statistical history for an achievement not previously recorded in the Opta era.
Kane is also joint-top of the Champions League scoring chart this season with four goals. Among the other players on the same total is Manchester City forward Erling Haaland.
Bayern Munich began their league-phase campaign with a 5-0 victory over Norwegian side Bodø/Glimt in the opening round. They were then held to a 3-3 draw by Norwegian club Viking in round two before sharing six goals with Arsenal.
The result against Arsenal marked another productive night for Kane, whose penalty and assist were central to Bayern Munich avoiding defeat after their contrasting results in the opening two rounds.
