Wydad dismiss Paulo Sergio after disappointing start to Moroccan league season

Wydad Athletic Club have ended Paulo Sergio’s tenure after only four matches of the 2026-27 Moroccan professional league season, with Nasreddine Nabi expected to take over.

The Portuguese manager’s brief spell was ended on Thursday following a poor run of results which left Wydad five points from a possible 12 and frustrated supporters at the Mohammed V Complex in Casablanca.

Wydad began the campaign hoping to challenge for honours again, but their season quickly went off course. They were beaten 3-1 by Wydad Temara in the opening round and managed just one victory in their first four matches, alongside one defeat and two draws.

The club confirmed the decision in a statement published on its social media accounts, saying it had “reached an agreement to end its association with Portuguese coach Paulo Sergio and terminate the contract between the two parties by mutual consent”.

Wydad also thanked Sergio for his time in charge.

The decision followed Sunday’s disappointing draw with Amal Tiznit at the Mohammed V Complex. That result prompted a strong reaction from Wydad supporters and increased pressure on the club’s management.

No home win for Sergio

Sergio’s record was particularly poor in Casablanca. Wydad failed to win any of the three matches they hosted in the city during his time in charge.

They lost to Wydad Temara and drew with Kawkab Athletic Club and Amal Tiznit. Their only victory came away from home against Difaa Hassani El Jadidi.

The failure to win at Wydad’s traditional home ground added to the pressure surrounding Sergio and ultimately contributed to his departure.

He becomes the latest in a growing list of managers to leave Wydad since last season. That group includes Amine Benhachem, Patrice Carteron, Mohamed Benchrifa and Adel Hermaj, underlining the club’s continuing lack of stability in the dugout.

Nabi set for Wydad move

Moroccan media reports say Wydad’s management have reached an agreement with Tunisian coach Nasreddine Nabi to lead the team for the next stage of the season.

Nabi previously coached Egyptian club Ismaily and is expected to begin a new challenge in the Moroccan league. Wydad are expected to announce his appointment officially within the coming hours.

The change comes with the club already outside the early title pace after four rounds and facing the task of restoring confidence following Sergio’s short-lived tenure.
