Former Zamalek forward, Walid Salah Abdel Latif, has raised concerns over Al-Ahly’s current crisis, highlighting the contrast with Zamalek’s surprising ascent to the top of the league table despite its own recent challenges.

His remarks come after Ahly were held to a 1-1 draw against Ceramica Cleopatra FC in midweek in the Egyptian topflight.

Speaking in an interview, Abdel Latif described the situation at Al-Ahly as “unexpected,” noting the difficulty of imagining Zamalek leading the league given the circumstances it faced.

“Al-Ahly players have become afraid to receive the ball so that they do not look bad, which reflects the absence of the team’s character, in addition to a clear decline in performance.”

Abdel Latif also questioned the fit between coach Torop and the squad, saying: “Coach Torop has a strong personality, but it does not suit the nature of the current players within the team.”

Pointing to internal issues, he stated: “Some Al-Ahly players feel that they are bigger than the club, even though the administration has provided distinguished elements and experienced players.”

He continued: “The problem lies in the differences within the team, whether in salaries or contracts, which affects harmony.”

He concluded with a warning: “If the coach cannot control the stars within the team, he will not be able to impose his style or achieve success, especially with the presence of big players who need strong management.”

Al Ahly will hope to return to winning ways when they host Smouha SC.
