Egyptian giants Al Ahly are exploring the possibility of bringing back former head coach Pitso Mosimane following their exit from the CAF Champions League.

The record African champions were eliminated at the quarter-final stage over the weekend after suffering a 4–2 aggregate defeat to Espérance de Tunis.

Earlier reports from AfricaSoccer.com indicated that the club’s hierarchy is considering parting ways with current manager Jess Thorup in the wake of the disappointing campaign.

In an official statement, Al Ahly acknowledged shortcomings within both the technical and administrative setup, while hinting at imminent changes.

“We acknowledge technical and administrative errors and their consequences. However, a decisive remedy (currently being prepared) requires a transitional period and some time to implement optimally,” the club said.

“Several decisions have already been made regarding the football sector. Some urgent decisions will be announced in the coming period, while others have been postponed in order to safeguard the club’s interests for the remainder of the season.”

Amid the uncertainty, fresh reports suggest the club is weighing up two candidates for the role, with Mosimane and Hossam El-Badry under consideration.

Mosimane, who managed the club between 2020 and 2022, remains a highly respected figure within the Al Ahly hierarchy after delivering six trophies in 102 matches. The 61-year-old has been out of work for over a year, but his previous success continues to position him as a strong contender for a potential return.
