Ex-Morocco captain Mehdi Benatia explains u-turn from Olympique Marseille exit
Former Moroccan international Mehdi Benatia has opened up about the circumstances that led him to consider leaving Olympique de Marseille before ultimately deciding to remain in his role as sporting director.
Speaking publicly for the first time since the dramatic developments at the French club, Benatia shed light on the tense period that nearly saw him step away.
According to reports by Kooora, citing the French newspaper Journal du Dimanche, the former national team captain agreed to stay on after a direct request from club owner Frank McCourt during what he described as a turbulent phase.
Benatia acknowledged that the situation had been challenging but made it clear that loyalty played a decisive role in his choice. “For many reasons, I could not abandon the club in these circumstances,” he said.
Addressing speculation about internal power struggles, Benatia firmly dismissed claims that he sought to expand his authority within the club’s structure.
“There was no conspiracy,” he stressed, adding that his attachment to Marseille influenced his decision to remain until the end of the season out of responsibility.
He further reiterated, “There is no conspiracy” surrounding the recent upheaval at the club, including the dismissal of coach Roberto De Zerbi. Benatia’s remarks appear aimed at calming tensions and clarifying his position amid ongoing scrutiny over the club’s direction.
