Brian Brobbey out for a month: Dutch-Ghanaian striker’s national team hopes hit

Sunderland’s attacking options have taken a blow with the news that striker Brian Brobbey will be unavailable for up to four weeks following an injury sustained in last weekend’s 3‑1 Premier League defeat to Fulham.

The 24‑year‑old, who has become a key figure in the Black Cats’ frontline since his move from Ajax last September, is now facing a spell on the sidelines that not only affects his club’s campaign but also imperils his hopes of rejoining the Dutch national team for forthcoming internationals.

Manager Régis Le Bris confirmed that Brobbey suffered the injury during the loss at the Stadium of Light and, while optimistic about a relatively short absence, stressed that the duration will depend on the striker’s response to treatment and rehabilitation.

The French coach also revealed that defender Nordi Mukiele is dealing with a similar issue, with both players expected to require between two and four weeks to recover.

Brobbey’s absence comes at a particularly challenging time for Sunderland, who are grappling with a swelling injury list that includes Jocelin Ta Bi and Romaine Mundle, both of whom face longer lay‑offs, with Ta Bi potentially requiring surgery.

The accumulation of setbacks leaves the Black Cats short of several first‑team contributors as they prepare for upcoming league fixtures.

The timing is equally unwelcome for Brobbey’s international ambitions. After a year on the fringes of Oranje, the striker had been in contention to make a return to the Dutch squad for friendlies against Norway and Ecuador scheduled for late March.

With recovery now likely to extend into that period, his participation is in serious doubt, a significant disappointment given his recent run of form in the Premier League.

Sunderland will hope that Brobbey’s injury heals swiftly, allowing the forward to resume his role in both club and international plans as the season’s crucial stages approach.
