‘I couldn’t believe it’ – Brandon Thomas-Asante relives Caleb Yirenkyi’s dramatic World Cup winner

Brandon Thomas-Asante has revealed the emotion behind Caleb Yirenkyi’s dramatic late winner against Panama at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, describing the moment as one that deeply resonated with him.

Yirenkyi struck in stoppage time to secure Ghana a 1-0 victory over Panama during the group stage, announcing himself on the biggest stage in international football.

Thomas-Asante, who provided the assist for the goal, said his close relationship with the midfielder made the moment particularly special.

“Just because of the love I have for him. When the ball hit the back of the net, he ran off and I was on the other side, and I couldn’t believe we had scored this late in the game,” Thomas-Asante said.

“There were two groups of huddles celebrating. I remember I was looking at Caleb and I was so pleased for him. That whole feeling resonated with me and I enjoyed that,” he added.

The goal capped a rapid rise for Yirenkyi, who had already attracted attention during his time with FC Nordsjaelland before securing a record move to Coventry City.

Thomas-Asante believes the midfielder’s World Cup breakthrough was a reflection of the character he had seen from him before his move to England.

Yirenkyi has since made an encouraging start at Coventry, assisting in a pre-season win over AS Monaco and setting up another goal against Plymouth Argyle in the League Cup.

The Ghanaian will now look to build on that momentum as Coventry continue their Premier League campaign.
