Mamoutou Kane returns to lead Mali U20 in bid to end AFCON drought

Mamoutou Kane has been appointed head coach of Mali’s U20 national team, marking a return for the man who guided the side to continental success in 2019.

The Malian Football Federation confirmed that Kane, widely known as “Mourlé”, will once again take charge of the junior Eagles.

His reappointment signals a renewed push to revive the fortunes of a team that has struggled to replicate its past achievements in recent years.

Kane previously oversaw one of the most successful periods in the history of Malian youth football, leading the U20s to continental glory in 2019.

That triumph remains a defining moment for the age group and cemented his reputation as one of the country’s most respected youth coaches.

However, since lifting that title, Mali’s U20 side has failed to qualify for the Africa U20 Cup of Nations.

The team has endured six years away from the tournament, a drought that has raised concerns about the direction of youth development at international level.

Kane now returns to familiar surroundings with a clear mandate: rebuild a competitive squad capable of navigating the qualification campaign and restoring Mali’s presence on the continental stage.

The task ahead is significant. Beyond assembling a talented group, he must also overcome the psychological barrier that has hindered recent campaigns.

The federation’s decision reflects confidence in his experience and understanding of the team’s structure and culture.

Supporters will hope his second spell in charge can deliver renewed momentum and re-establish Mali as a force in African youth football.

For Kane, the objective is straightforward — guide the next generation back to the Africa U20 Cup of Nations and reclaim the status the nation once proudly held.
