Bono pens emotional tribute to retiring Morocco captain Romain Saïss
The wave of emotion following Romain Saïss’s decision to retire from international football has continued to resonate within the Moroccan camp, with goalkeeper Yassine Bounou delivering a touching farewell to his longtime captain.
Bounou, popularly known as Bono, took to his official Instagram page to honour Saïss, reflecting on the years they spent side by side representing Morocco.
“Dear Captain, I want to thank you for all the moments we have shared together. It has been an honour to share them with you. You are a legend of our national team, but above all, you are a great person with great values. I send you and your whole family my warmest kisses. Thank you, Romain,” Bono said.
The tribute underscored not only Saïss’s influence on the pitch but also the character and leadership he displayed off it.
Together, the duo formed part of the backbone of a generation that etched its name into history, most notably during Morocco’s remarkable run at the FIFA World Cup, where the Atlas Lions captured global admiration.
Saïss did not let the message go unanswered. Responding warmly in the comments section.
“My brother forever, it has been a true pleasure to spend all those years by your side. I love you, brother, and you will always be my family. Much love,” he shared.
Earlier this week, Saïss formally confirmed his retirement from international duty in an emotional statement shared on Instagram.
“Today I conclude the most beautiful chapter of my football career. After deep reflection and with great emotion, I announce my retirement from international football,” he declared.
He continued, “Wearing the colors of Morocco and the captain’s armband will remain the greatest honor of my career. For me, this shirt transcends the sporting dimension; it is a story of roots, family, and heart. Every time I wore it, I felt the weight of responsibility and an indescribable pride.”
In his farewell message, Saïss also paid tribute to Mohammed VI, acknowledging the monarch’s role in the transformation of Moroccan football.
“I express my deep gratitude to King Mohammed VI. Thanks to his lofty vision, the work of the university, the development of our infrastructure, and the professionalism of the training system, Morocco has become a global reference point in football,” he stated.
Looking ahead, the veteran defender expressed confidence in the national team’s future.
“The future of our national team looks promising, and I hope it wins many titles. I will remain its biggest fan, loyal and enthusiastic, no matter what the circumstances.”
Saïss leaves the international stage after earning 86 caps since making his debut in 2012, cementing his place as one of Morocco’s most influential figures during a golden era for the national side.
