Morocco: Romain Saïss announces international retirement

Romain Saïss has announced his retirement from international football, ending his career with Morocco after 86 caps and three goals.

The 35-year-old defender, who has captained the national side in recent years, made the announcement on Monday without prior indication that he intended to step away.

Saïss, who turns 36 in March, described the decision as the closing of the most meaningful chapter of his career.

“Today, I close the most beautiful chapter of my football career. After careful consideration, it is with immense emotion that I announce my international retirement. Wearing the colors of Morocco and becoming its captain will remain the greatest honor of my career. For me, this jersey transcends sport: it is a story of roots, family, and heart. Every time I wore it, I felt the weight of responsibility, but above all, an indescribable pride. As a child, I dreamed of these moments. I have always given everything for this flag and for this country that has given me so much, constantly guided by love for our nation and respect for its people.”

Saïss leaves the Atlas Lions as one of the most recognisable figures of his generation, having led the team through major tournaments and serving as a central figure in the dressing room.

His leadership and experience made him a key presence on and off the pitch.

In his farewell message, he extended his gratitude to supporters, former team-mates, successive members of the coaching staff, the national federation and King Mohammed VI.

He also expressed optimism about the direction of the national side.

“The future of our national team looks bright. I wish them many trophies, InshAllah. I will now be your number one supporter, loyal and passionate, no matter what. I am leaving the national team, but I will forever remain a Lion. Allah Al Watan Al Malik Forever, Dima Maghreb Love.”

His departure marks the end of an era for Morocco, with Saïss stepping aside after nearly a decade of international service and leadership.
