Nigeria could miss out on one of Europe’s most promising midfielders, as Borussia Dortmund star Carney Chukwuemeka appears set to pledge his international future to Austria ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
The 22-year-old, born to Nigerian parents in Eisenstadt, Austria, has already represented England at youth level, including being part of the under-19 squad that lifted the 2022 European Championship, but has yet to feature for the senior Three Lions side.
This opens the door for Austria to secure a significant coup in their preparations for next summer’s global tournament.
Chukwuemeka spent his early childhood in Austria before moving to Northampton, England, where he acquired British citizenship.
Although he renounced his Austrian nationality as a minor, regulations allow him to have it reinstated, and the Austrian Football Association is reportedly finalizing an agreement to make him eligible for their national team.
While the midfielder also qualifies to play for France, Austria appears to be leading the race for his signature.
Since joining Dortmund from Chelsea last summer following a productive loan spell, Chukwuemeka has made 26 appearances across all competitions, scoring three goals and starting six Bundesliga matches.
His versatility and technical quality in midfield make him a valuable asset for Austria as they prepare to face Jordan, Algeria, and Argentina in the World Cup group stage, which kicks off on June 16 at Levi’s Stadium, California.
Austria, coached by former Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick, earned their spot at the 2026 tournament by topping Group H ahead of Bosnia-Herzegovina and Romania, highlighting their ambition to make a mark on football’s biggest stage.
The addition of Chukwuemeka would bolster an already competitive squad and provide Rangnick with a creative and dynamic option in central midfield.
For Nigeria, losing the talented midfielder would be a significant setback. With his pace, technical skill, and experience at top-tier European clubs, Chukwuemeka could have strengthened the Super Eagles’ midfield options and provided fresh dynamism.
