Rayo Vallecano has explained why it did not pay tribute to Senegalese midfielder Pathé Ciss following his Africa Cup of Nations triumph, clarifying that the omission was due to a day of mourning.
The Madrid club faced criticism after failing to honour Ciss before their 1-3 home defeat to Osasuna on Saturday, while many LaLiga teams celebrated their African internationals who had recently won the 2025 AFCON in Morocco.
The Senegalese player himself shared his disappointment on social media, retweeting posts questioning the club’s decision.
Rayo Vallecano responded on Sunday morning with a statement via its official social media channels.
“Rayo Vallecano reports that yesterday, the tribute to our player Pathé Ciss, following the conquest of the Africa Cup of Nations, did not take place, as it was deemed inappropriate to organize any form of celebration on a day of mourning when the team wore black armbands and observed a minute of silence in memory of those who died in the tragic train accidents of Adamuz and Gelida,” the club said.
The club reassured supporters that Ciss’s achievement would be formally recognised at a later date.
“The well-deserved recognition of Pathé Ciss will take place in the lead-up to the next match, which will be played in Vallecas on Saturday, February 7 against Real Oviedo,” the statement added.

The incident highlights the tension that can arise when clubs balance celebratory gestures with broader social responsibilities.
While Rayo Vallecano’s explanation acknowledges the national tragedy, some observers and fans remain disappointed that the AFCON winner did not receive immediate recognition.
The club now intends to honour Ciss properly at the upcoming home fixture, giving supporters an opportunity to celebrate the midfielder’s contribution to Senegal’s historic continental success.
