Immediate-past South Africa coach Hugo Broos delivers brutal verdict on Pitso Mosimane’s return

Former South Africa head coach Hugo Broos has raised concerns about the imminent appointment of Pitso Mosimane as Bafana Bafana new gaffer.

Broos ended his spell as South Africa coach last month, with Mosimane reportedly emerging as the leading candidate to succeed the Belgian.

However, Broos has kicked against the possible return of Mosimane, stressing the Bafana Bafana will go back five years with the former tactician in charge.

“South Africa still don’t have a coach,” Broos told Het Nieuwsblad. “The candidate is Pitso Mosimane, a successful South African coach. But they know that if he comes in, they’ll go five years back in time.”

Broos also reflected on his approach to managing the national team, particularly his stance against outside influence over squad selection.

“Club owners and agents calling coaches to influence the squad selection. I threw all of them out. If one called, I would say bluntly: ‘I don’t talk with agents’.”

Mosimane is widely expected to be confirmed as Broos’ successor this week, potentially marking his return to the Bafana Bafana dugout.

Hugo Broos led South Africa to the 2026 World Cup tournament in North America, where the Bafana Bafana managed to reach the round 32 of the global showpiece before being kicked out after defeat to Mexico.
