Sofiane Boufal exits AFCON 2023 due to injury, Morocco faces offensive challenges

Moroccan international Sofiane Boufal is reportedly set for a private meeting with Wydad Casablanca president Hicham Ait Mena on Wednesday, 13 January, as the club looks to persuade the winger to join their ranks.

According to Radio Mars, the discussion will focus on both the club’s sporting project and financial package, highlighting Wydad’s ambition to secure the former Angers and Southampton star.

Boufal, 28, recently ended his short stint at Royale Union Saint-Gilloise (USG) after reaching a mutual agreement to terminate his contract.

His time at the Belgian side, which began in the summer of 2024, never fully lived up to expectations due to injuries and limited minutes on the pitch.

Across the 2025/26 season, he made just 14 appearances in all competitions, registering one assist in the Belgian Pro League and another in the UEFA Champions League.

In the previous 2024/25 season, he played 25 games and recorded four assists but failed to find the back of the net.

With his move to Le Havre AC in Ligue 1 confirmed, Boufal is seeking more consistent playing time and opportunities to make an impact.

Wydad’s interest signals a potential return to African football, where the Moroccan star could bring experience and flair to the Casablanca club, provided terms are agreed upon in the upcoming meeting.
