Nigeria’s quest for a fourth Africa Cup of Nations title has been dealt a worrying blow after injuries to Cyriel Dessers and debutant Ryan Alebiosu cast doubt over their availability for the knockout stages.
The Super Eagles secured a 3–1 victory over Uganda, but the win came at a cost. Blackburn Rovers defender Alebiosu, making his first appearance for Nigeria, delivered an assured performance at right-back, playing the full 90 minutes in place of Bright Osayi-Samuel.
However, the 22-year-old was left injured after sustaining a deep cut to his leg and was taken to hospital for treatment. His condition will now be closely monitored ahead of Nigeria’s Round of 16 clash with Mozambique.
Head coach Eric Chelle praised the youngster’s display but admitted concern over the extent of the injury.
“It’s difficult to play,” Chelle said. “This is his first game in Africa, in AFCON. I am happy with what he did, but I’m a little worried because he has an injury.
“When they scored the goal, he had a big… I don’t know the word in English, but he went to the hospital. His leg is open.”
Nigeria are also sweating on the fitness of striker Cyriel Dessers, who is nursing a thigh problem. The Panathinaikos forward is due to undergo a scan to determine the severity of the injury and whether he can continue in the tournament.
Despite the concerns, Chelle remains confident in the depth of his squad.
The three-time African champions will face Mozambique on 5 January in Fez, with victory setting up a quarter-final showdown against either Algeria or DR Congo. But with injuries mounting, Nigeria’s path to continental glory has suddenly become more uncertain.
