Raphinha’s early penalty puts Barcelona ahead as Spider-Man gesture raises Alvarez questions

Raphinha gave Barcelona the perfect start against Elche by scoring from the penalty spot in the 13th minute at the Martinez Valero Stadium, before a cryptic Spider-Man celebration appeared to reference Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez.

The Brazilian earned the penalty himself after escaping Victor Chust, who caught Raphinha’s foot while attempting to stop him inside the area. Raphinha then took responsibility from 12 yards and struck a powerful left-footed effort into the left corner, beyond Elche goalkeeper Dituro.

The goal marked an ideal beginning to the new season for Raphinha, who was also making his first competitive appearance as Barcelona captain. He had been selected as the club’s interim skipper by manager Hansi Flick, with a vote in the dressing room still expected once the squad is complete.

Raphinha initially celebrated with his team-mates, but then caught the attention of those watching by performing the well-known Spider-Man gesture. Reports interpreted the celebration as a possible message aimed at Alvarez, whose name has been linked with interest from Barcelona.

Alvarez, meanwhile, had endured a difficult evening with Atletico Madrid after being subjected to jeers from his own supporters during their match against Villarreal. That reaction has added further intrigue to the meaning behind Raphinha’s celebration, although no explanation has been offered by the Barcelona player.

Flick has placed Raphinha at the centre of Barcelona’s attack while the club waits for the arrival of a recognised striker. Lamine Yamal operated on the right side, while Karim Adeyemi played on the left, leaving Raphinha with a prominent attacking role from the opening whistle.

The captaincy represented another significant moment for Raphinha, who is beginning the campaign after a previous season disrupted by injuries. His early goal provided an immediate contribution in his first official match wearing the armband.

Barcelona’s penalty came after Raphinha’s direct running created the danger. He moved past Chust before the Elche defender’s challenge brought him down, allowing the forward to combine his first major moment as captain with the opening goal of the match.

The celebration, however, quickly became almost as prominent as the finish itself. The Spider-Man motion led to speculation because of Alvarez’s association with the superhero character and the wider reports connecting the Atletico Madrid forward with Barcelona.

For now, the meaning of the gesture remains unclear. What is certain is that Raphinha had already made a decisive impact at Martinez Valero, scoring Barcelona’s first goal of the new season and helping his side take an early lead.
