Wanya Marcal: Portuguese-Angolan winger joins Stevenage after leaving Leicester

Portuguese-Angolan winger Wanya Marcal has joined Stevenage after leaving Leicester and spending the opening part of the 2026-27 season without a club.

The 23-year-old right winger completed the move to the League One side on 15 September. No transfer fee has been disclosed.

Marcal was born in Leicester and developed through the city club’s youth system, progressing from Leicester Under-18s to the Under-23 side before joining the senior squad in July 2023. He was part of Leicester’s squad during their English second-tier title-winning campaign in the 2023-24 season.

His record in Premier League 2 includes 57 appearances, 11 goals and three assists. He also made three Championship appearances and scored once during his time in English football.

Marcal spent the 2024-25 season on loan with Dutch club De Graafschap, where he played 12 times in the Keuken Kampioen Divisie, scoring one goal and providing one assist. He returned to Leicester at the end of that loan spell before leaving the club on 1 July 2026.

The move to Stevenage brings Marcal back into the English game and adds a player with experience of academy, senior and overseas football to the club’s squad. He is right-footed and stands 1.81m tall.

Marcal’s career record also includes appearances in the FA Cup, EFL Trophy, EFL Cup, KNVB Beker, Premier League International Cup and Premier League Cup. He scored three goals in three FA Youth Cup appearances and registered two assists in six EFL Trophy matches.

He now begins a new chapter with Stevenage after joining the club as a free agent.
