Egyptian coach Mohamed Fathi has emerged as a potential option for clubs in the Betway Premiership, with the experienced tactician understood to be open to taking up a coaching opportunity in South Africa.

Fathi’s representatives in South Africa are reportedly exploring possibilities for the 52-year-old, who is currently available following his departure from Zambian side Kansanshi Dynamos.

The development comes as the South African top flight enters the early stages of a coaching reshuffle, creating potential opportunities for experienced coaches with continental pedigree.

Fathi has built much of his reputation in African football, particularly in Zambia, where he has worked with several clubs and handled difficult assignments. His availability could therefore attract interest from teams seeking an experienced coach capable of navigating demanding situations.

Marumo Gallants situation puts Fathi on radar

One club whose situation could make Fathi a name to monitor is Marumo Gallants, who are searching for a new permanent head coach following the departure of Phuti Mohafe and his assistant, Musa Bilankulu.

Gallants confirmed earlier this week that the two coaches had left the club with immediate effect.

Second assistant coach Trevor Mathiane has since assumed responsibility on an interim basis while the Limpopo-based club considers candidates for the vacant position.

There is currently no indication that Fathi is close to being appointed by Gallants, but his availability and reported willingness to work in South Africa could place him among the coaches worth considering as the club weighs its options.

The Egyptian’s extensive experience across the continent could strengthen his credentials at a time when clubs are looking for coaches capable of producing immediate results.

Fathi built reputation in Zambia

Fathi’s coaching career has been particularly associated with Zambia, where he has worked with several clubs over the years.

His most recent assignment came at Kansanshi Dynamos, where he was appointed late last year after the club had found itself in a difficult position near the relegation zone.

His immediate challenge was to help the team avoid danger, a situation that was familiar to him after previously helping NAPSA Stars navigate a difficult period.

That experience of working under pressure has become an important part of Fathi’s coaching profile, particularly as clubs in competitive leagues look for managers capable of stabilising teams in challenging circumstances.

Continental experience strengthens his case

Fathi’s career extends well beyond Kansanshi Dynamos and NAPSA Stars.

The Egyptian has previously worked with Power Dynamos, Kabwe Warriors, Lusaka Dynamos and Highlanders in Zambia. He has also had spells with Moroccan club Berrechid and Al-Bashaer and DC Motema Pembe, while serving as an assistant coach at Abha.

One of the biggest achievements of his career came during the 2020/21 season, when he guided NAPSA Stars to their first-ever appearance in the CAF Confederation Cup group stage.

That achievement remains a significant milestone in the coach’s career and underlines his experience in continental competition.

Fathi has also continued to strengthen his coaching qualifications, having undertaken the CAF Pro Elite Licence course through the Egyptian Football Federation.

With the 2026/27 Betway Premiership season already producing changes on the coaching front, Fathi’s next destination remains uncertain.
