Atlanta United have completed the signing of Swiss international of Cameroonian descent Breel Embolo from French Ligue 1 side Rennes.

The 29-year-old has signed a four-year contract with the MLS club and will occupy a Designated Player slot.

Atlanta are understood to have agreed a €17m fee for Embolo, making the move one of the five most expensive transfers in MLS history.

Embolo makes MLS move

Embolo only joined Rennes from Monaco last summer but will now leave France after one season with the club.

The Switzerland international made 34 appearances for Rennes, scoring 10 goals and providing three assists.

His arrival is expected to add significant attacking experience to Atlanta’s squad as the club strengthen their options in the final third.

Atlanta’s Chief Soccer Officer and Sporting Director Chris Henderson praised Embolo’s qualities and experience.

“At age 29, he’s coming off a strong performance at the World Cup with Switzerland and has a proven track record of goal contributions in multiple top European leagues“, said Henderson.

Major investment by Atlanta

The deal represents a significant financial commitment from Atlanta, with Embolo becoming one of the most expensive players to move to MLS.

His four-year contract also underlines the club’s confidence in the forward’s ability to make an impact in American football.

For Rennes, the transfer brings an immediate return on a player signed from Monaco only last summer.

Rennes prepare for PSG clash

Embolo’s departure comes as Rennes prepare to begin their Ligue 1 campaign against reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain.

The French club will have to continue their preparations without the Swiss striker, who has now begun a new chapter of his career in Major League Soccer.

For Atlanta United, Embolo’s arrival provides an experienced international forward as they look to strengthen their squad and compete in the Eastern Conference.
