Yan Diomandé earns plaudit from Mourinho

Real Madrid manager José Mourinho has expressed his admiration for the potential of Ivorian winger Yan Diomandé after the teenager made his first start for the Spanish giants since joining the club this summer.

Diomandé was handed a starting role on Saturday as Real Madrid hosted Rayo Vallecano at the Santiago Bernabéu, and the 19-year-old took the opportunity to showcase the qualities that convinced the club to bring him to the Spanish capital.

Real Madrid went on to secure a convincing 4-1 victory, with Diomandé’s performance earning praise from Mourinho, who believes the young Ivorian has enormous potential but still has plenty to learn.

The Portuguese coach admitted that Diomandé’s tactical understanding remains an area that requires development, but he has been particularly impressed by the winger’s natural ability in attacking situations.

“He has a lot to learn tactically. I see it most clearly in training – his incredible potential in one-on-one situations, with crosses and with shots. He’s a strong player,” Mourinho said.

The Real Madrid boss also made it clear that he is keen to work closely with Diomandé and help accelerate his development, particularly because he already has a clear understanding of what the club’s more established players can contribute.

“I want to develop the young Diomandé because I already know what the rest of the players can offer,” Mourinho added.

Despite his obvious talent, Mourinho stressed that Diomandé remains a developing player who needs time and regular exposure to the highest level before he can reach his full potential.

The teenager has limited experience in top-level European football, having gained most of his senior experience during the previous campaign with RB Leipzig. His move to Real Madrid therefore represents a significant step forward in his career.

“He’s making progress. He has very little experience in top-flight European football, which he gained almost entirely last season with Leipzig, and very little else,” Mourinho explained.

One of the qualities that particularly appeals to Mourinho is Diomandé’s tactical versatility. The Ivorian can operate in different attacking positions, giving Real Madrid additional options when adjusting their formation during matches.

Mourinho believes Diomandé can play in the position normally occupied by Vinícius Júnior, while also having the ability to operate from the right flank.

“His presence gives us plenty of options. He can play in Vinícius’s position, or on the right wing, and Arda can play on the right, or in Jude Bellingham’s position,” he said.

The manager’s comments underline the faith he has in the young Ivorian, despite acknowledging that there is still considerable work to be done.

For Diomandé, the first start marks an important milestone in his early Real Madrid career. With his pace, one-on-one ability, crossing and shooting qualities already attracting attention, the youngster will now look to build on his encouraging performance and gradually establish himself within Mourinho’s plans.

The victory over Rayo Vallecano provided Diomandé with valuable experience at the Santiago Bernabéu, while Mourinho’s backing could give the teenager further confidence as he continues his adaptation to life at one of Europe’s biggest clubs.
