Egypt international Mohamed Salah scored twice as Trabzonspor secured their first Turkish Super Lig victory of the season with a thrilling 2-1 win over Istanbul Basaksehir on Sunday.

The 34-year-old was the difference-maker at the Babara Park Stadium, scoring his first goals for Trabzonspor and producing an influential performance to lead his new side to victory.

Salah’s goals came either side of Eldor Shomurodov’s penalty as Trabzonspor moved to four points from their opening two league matches.

Salah opens Trabzonspor account

Salah broke the deadlock in the eighth minute after reacting quickly to a cross inside the penalty area.

The Egyptian capitalised on a mistake by the Basaksehir goalkeeper and struck the loose ball towards goal. His effort hit the post before crossing the line.

The referee initially consulted VAR before confirming the goal, giving Salah his first strike since joining Trabzonspor.

Basaksehir were then awarded a penalty in the 19th minute after VAR identified a handball inside the area.

Shomurodov stepped up and converted to restore parity.

Egyptian forward strikes again

Salah restored Trabzonspor’s advantage shortly after half-time.

The forward combined with team-mate Mochi in an impressive attacking move before receiving the ball inside the penalty area and firing a powerful finish into the net in the 48th minute.

The goal proved decisive as Trabzonspor protected their lead for the remainder of the match.

Salah remained a constant threat and was booked in the 78th minute for an alleged dive inside the penalty area.

Two late goals ruled out

Salah continued to search for a hat-trick during stoppage time and appeared to have found the net again in the second minute of added time.

The goal was disallowed after the referee judged that a foul had occurred.

The Egyptian then scored again two minutes later, but that effort was ruled out for offside.

Despite the late drama, Trabzonspor held on to secure their first victory of the campaign.

Trabzonspor climb to third

The win moves Trabzonspor to four points after two matches.

They had opened their league campaign with a 1-1 draw against Kasimpasa and now sit third in the standings.

For Basaksehir, the defeat was their first of the season, leaving them on three points in eighth place.

Salah’s two goals provide an early indication of his importance to Trabzonspor as the Egyptian begins his new chapter in Turkish football.
