Patrick Dorgu’s journey from his Nigerian heritage to representing Denmark took centre stage on Friday night, as the Manchester United defender marked a landmark moment with the winning goal against Newcastle United in the English Premier League.
The Denmark international of Nigerian descent struck midway through the second half to seal a 1–0 victory at Old Trafford, scoring his first goal at the stadium and delivering a decisive moment in a tightly contested Premier League match.
“It was a good hit,” Dorgu said after the final whistle. “I didn’t know I could do that, but I was very happy to score my first goal in this stadium as well. It was amazing.”
Born to Nigerian roots and now established as part of Denmark’s national team setup, Dorgu’s rise has been shaped by confidence and persistence, qualities he said were key to Friday’s performance.
“I just took what the coach told me to work on my confidence and stuff,” he explained. “I think I did well today. I just looked at the ball, saw it drop, and I just hit it.
“I’ve been practising in training, so I think that’s what helped me.”
United head coach Ruben Amorim praised Dorgu’s impact, highlighting both his adaptability and willingness to take responsibility in a slightly altered role.
“He played in a different position today, where he can take more risks,” Amorim said. “That helped Patrick play well.”
The manager also pointed to a collective sense of leadership within the squad, praising the contribution of players coming off the bench and the resilience shown across the team.
For Dorgu, the goal was more than just a match-winner. It was a moment that reflected a broader journey from African roots to representing Denmark on the international stage, and now making his mark at one of football’s biggest clubs.
As Manchester United continue their season, Dorgu’s breakthrough night may prove to be a defining chapter in a career still very much on the rise.
