Aubameyang lights up Deportivo’s top-flight comeback with spectacular early strike

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang marked his return to La Liga with a spectacular goal for Deportivo, although the promoted side were held to a draw by Elche after conceding a late equaliser.

The 37-year-old forward needed only 20 minutes to make an immediate impact on his first appearance back in Spain’s top flight. He controlled a long pass from Lorenzo Amatucci before finishing with composure to give Deportivo the lead.

The goal was the highlight of an impressive start for the newly promoted club, who appeared on course to claim their first La Liga victory of the season. However, Elche fought back during the second half and levelled the match with 14 minutes of normal time remaining.

Marc Aguado scored the equaliser in the 76th minute after being set up by Gonzalo Villar. Neither side could find a winning goal in the closing stages, leaving the points shared.

Aubameyang’s arrival had been one of the major moves of Deportivo’s summer transfer window. The club secured the signing of the experienced striker as they prepared for their return to the highest level of Spanish football.

Deportivo’s promotion ended a difficult period for a club that won the Spanish championship in 2000. They were relegated from La Liga at the end of the 2017-18 season, beginning a prolonged decline through the divisions.

The situation worsened in 2020, when Deportivo dropped into the third tier of Spanish football. Their recovery gathered pace last season, when they finished second in Segunda Division and earned promotion back to La Liga.

That status as a newly promoted team made Aubameyang’s immediate contribution particularly significant. His opening goal gave Deportivo the ideal start and briefly put them on course to announce their return to the elite with a victory.

Instead, Elche’s response ensured the fixture ended level. Aguado’s finish cancelled out Aubameyang’s composed effort, and the two teams were unable to produce another decisive moment before the final whistle.

For Deportivo, the result represented a point from their first La Liga campaign since returning to the division. For Aubameyang, it was an eye-catching personal introduction, with his finish from Amatucci’s long ball providing an early reminder of his quality in front of goal.
