South Africa head coach Hugo Broos shared his excitement on Monday after leading the team to secure a 2-1 win over Angola in their opening match at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
In an entertaining encounter that ensued between the two national teams, the Bafana Bafana scored first, but the opponent crawled into the game and equalised to make it 1-1 before the break.
Thanks to a stunning Lyle Foster strike in the second half, South Africa bagged all three points at full-time after a 2-1 victory.
Speaking in his post-match interview, Hugo Broos raised concerns about the Bafana Bafana’s first-half performance, admitting that it was not the best.
He was, however, happy that after correcting their mistake at halftime, the team managed to get the job done in the second half.
“Today’s match started well, we were leading 1-0, but after that we fell asleep. We let Angola come into the game, there was no passion, no aggression in our play, no depth, nothing at all.
“We dotted the i’s and crossed the t’s during the break, we substituted a player and it did us a lot of good. Moremi really changed our game. I think at that moment, the pressure shifted, and that did us good.
“It was a wake-up call for us today; it came at the right time. To play a first half like we did and then play well in the second half and win the game, you have to be happy,” Hugo Broos said.
After Monday’s win, South Africa will now prepare for their next Group B game against Egypt on Friday, December 26.
