Anticipation is building ahead of the opening ceremony of the 35th Africa Cup of Nations, which will take place at 5:30 pm on Sunday, December 21, at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.

The ceremony will officially usher in Africa’s biggest football event, setting the tone for weeks of continental competition.

Thousands of supporters from across Africa and beyond are expected to converge on the Moroccan capital for the occasion, underlining the country’s growing reputation as a trusted host of major international sporting events. In preparation for the ceremony, stadium gates will open as early as 2:00 p.m., allowing fans sufficient time to access the venue, find their seats and take part in pre-match activities.

The tournament’s organising committee, in a statement communicated through the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, has urged spectators to arrive early in order to ease crowd movement and uphold strict safety measures. Officials have stressed that smooth coordination will be key to delivering a memorable and secure experience for everyone in attendance.

Following the ceremonial festivities, attention will turn to the opening match of the tournament, with host nation Morocco facing Comoros at 8:00 p.m. (GMT+1).

Supporters have been reminded to adhere to all entry requirements, including the possession of valid match tickets and FAN IDs via the Yalla application, which are compulsory for stadium access. Organisers say these measures are part of broader efforts to enhance safety, comfort and overall organisation throughout the competition.

The opening ceremony itself is expected to be a vibrant celebration of African culture and Moroccan heritage, blending music, performance and football in a grand display. A major highlight will be the performance of the official AFCON 2025 theme song, featuring Moroccan rising star Jaylann, French-Moroccan artist L’Artiste and Beninese music legend Angélique Kidjo, according to SNRT News.

Authorities have also called on fans to cooperate fully with security and organisational guidelines to ensure a safe and enjoyable atmosphere, particularly given the large crowds anticipated for the opening night. With detailed planning already in place, organisers are confident of delivering a seamless start to the tournament.

As Morocco hosts its first Africa Cup of Nations since 1988, Sunday’s ceremony and opening fixture carry deep significance beyond football.

They represent a moment of national pride and African unity, bringing together sport, music and culture in a fitting launch to AFCON 2025.
