Kelsey Egwu has completed a move from Valour FC to Monterey Bay FC, leaving the Canadian Premier League side to join the USL Championship club in the United States on a permanent deal starting 09/12/2025. The transfer, recorded without a disclosed fee, sees the centre-back commit to Monterey Bay on a contract running until 01/01/2026.

The 21-year-old defender, valued at €100k at the time of the move, switches from Canada’s top domestic competition to the second tier of US football, adding another step to a career that has already taken him through several leagues and clubs in rapid succession. His departure also means Valour lose a player whose market value had risen steadily through 2025, reflecting his growing reputation.

Egwu joins Monterey Bay as a left-footed centre-back, offering height at 1.91m and versatility across the heart of defence. Born in Toronto, Ontario, and holding Canadian and Nigerian nationality, he becomes part of a growing group of young Canadian talents heading abroad in search of regular minutes and a higher-profile platform. The move also positions him in a league that regularly showcases players to Major League Soccer and beyond.

The transfer comes at the end of a busy two-year period of change. Egwu moved from FC London in Canada to JK Trans Narva in Estonia in early 2024, gaining European experience in the Estonian Meistriliiga before returning to North America. In February 2025, he joined Valour FC on loan from Trans Narva, with his valuation rising from €50k in Estonia to €75k and then €100k during his time in Winnipeg. That loan spell ultimately preceded a full switch from Valour to Monterey Bay, with his registration now fully transferred to the US club.

Earlier in his career, Egwu progressed through several Canadian setups, including BTB Soccer Academy and Grant MacEwan University, as well as a loan stint at FC Edmonton in 2022. Those moves marked his transition from youth and university football into the professional ranks, with his first noted market value of €10k arriving during his time with FC Edmonton.

Monterey Bay’s acquisition of Egwu reflects their willingness to invest in younger defenders with resale potential, particularly those comfortable in physically demanding leagues. His left-footed profile is relatively rare in central defence, and his height gives him an obvious advantage in aerial duels, set-piece defending and attacking situations in the opposition box.

For Valour, the transfer concludes a short but profitable sporting association with a player whose value rose significantly during his spell at the club. With his contract at Monterey Bay due to expire on 01/01/2026, Egwu will have an important window to establish himself in the USLC and either earn an extended stay in the United States or attract interest from higher divisions. The move offers him a clear opportunity to consolidate his progress and position himself for the next major step in his career.
