Juventus end Arthur Melo contract by mutual consent after four years of loan spells

Juventus have ended Arthur Melo’s contract by mutual agreement, leaving the Brazilian midfielder free to join another club without a transfer fee.

The Italian club announced the decision in a brief statement, saying: “Good luck in the future.”

Arthur, 30, joined Juventus from Barcelona in the summer of 2020 but was unable to establish himself as a regular starter during his time in Turin. He made 63 appearances for the club, scoring once and providing one assist.

The midfielder’s Juventus career was repeatedly interrupted by loan moves. In the 2022-23 season, he spent the campaign with Liverpool, where he played only one match.

He moved to Fiorentina in the summer of 2023 and enjoyed a more productive spell with the club, making 48 appearances for the Viola. Arthur subsequently returned to Juventus hoping to secure regular first-team football, but remained at the club for only six months.

He was then sent on loan to Girona for six months before joining Brazilian club Gremio on loan last season.

The end of his Juventus contract brings to a close a period in which Arthur struggled to maintain a settled place at the club after arriving from Barcelona. He is now free to negotiate with any team and complete a move without a transfer fee.

Arthur began his senior career at Gremio before earning a move to Barcelona. During his time with the Catalan club, he won La Liga and the Spanish Super Cup.

At Juventus, he added the Coppa Italia and the Italian Super Cup to his honours. He also won the Copa America with Brazil.

At international level, Arthur made 22 appearances for Brazil and scored one goal.

His career has included spells at several prominent European clubs, although injuries, competition for places and successive loan transfers limited his continuity at Juventus. His single season with Liverpool produced just one appearance, while his time at Fiorentina gave him a more regular role before he returned to Turin.

The termination means Juventus have now formally ended their association with a player who joined the club in 2020 as part of a move from Barcelona. Arthur’s next destination will be his first permanent transfer since leaving Gremio for European football, with the midfielder able to choose his new club as a free agent.
