Algeria turn to Mazzarri as search for new head coach gathers pace

Walter Mazzarri has emerged as the leading candidate to become Algeria’s next head coach, with the Italian reportedly moving closer to an agreement with the Algerian Football Federation (FAF).

The 64-year-old is understood to be in a strong position in the race to succeed Petkovic, who recently left his role. The FAF has continued discussions over the appointment of a new manager and, according to Algerian broadcaster AL24news, Mazzarri is now the main contender to take charge of the national team.

No final agreement has yet been announced by the federation, meaning the appointment remains subject to further negotiations. However, the latest developments suggest Mazzarri has moved ahead of other names being considered for the position.

Mazzarri brings extensive experience from European football’s top level. During his managerial career, he has worked with Napoli, Inter Milan, Fiorentina and Watford, overseeing teams in both domestic and international competition.

His time at Napoli is regarded as the standout period of his career. He guided the club to victory in the Coppa Italia in 2012 before leading them to second place in Serie A in 2013. Those achievements established Mazzarri as one of the prominent Italian coaches of his generation and remain the most notable successes of his managerial record.

The Algeria position has also been linked with Stefano Pioli, although that possibility is reportedly becoming less likely. AL24news says the discussions surrounding Pioli have lost momentum, while the alternative option involving Tiago Pinto has stalled because of disagreements over the make-up of his coaching staff.

That leaves Mazzarri as the clearest candidate to take control of Algeria’s national side. The next round of talks between the coach and the FAF is expected to determine whether the Italian will formally accept the role and become the latest manager to lead the Greens.

For now, the federation has not confirmed that an agreement has been reached. Mazzarri’s possible appointment will depend on the outcome of the remaining discussions, with the FAF still required to finalise the terms before announcing its decision.

If completed, the move would bring a coach with experience at Napoli, Inter Milan, Fiorentina and Watford into international management with Algeria. It would also end the federation’s search for a successor to Petkovic, although confirmation of Mazzarri’s arrival is still awaited.
