Angolan legend Fabrice Akwa reflects on African talent and Mohamed Salah’s challenges

Angolan football legend Fabrice Akwa shared his insights in a recent interview about the growth of African football, the difficulties facing the Angolan national team, and the ongoing global recognition struggle for players like Mohamed Salah.

Akwa, celebrated for leading Angola to their only World Cup appearance in 2006, praised the improvement in African club and national team competitiveness, attributing it to increased investments and the influence of African players in Europe.

When asked about Salah’s failure to win the Ballon d’Or, Akwa remarked, “Mohamed Salah is a model of consistency, performing at the highest level for Liverpool. Unfortunately, he peaked during the era of legends like Ronaldo and Messi—otherwise, he would have surely won the Ballon d’Or.” He emphasized, “Salah’s achievements fill all Africans with pride; he’s absolutely one of the continent’s best ever, if not the world.”

Akwa believes African football can reach new heights through better training, infrastructure, and reforms in administration. On young talent, he noted that Africa boasts many skilled stars and expects more to shine on the global stage. He advised African players to assert themselves in top European leagues, as this is vital for global recognition.

Discussing new signings, Akwa expressed confidence in Chico Banza’s adaptation to Zamalek, describing him as “mentally strong” and ready for the challenge. He concluded by highlighting the promise in African squads and the importance of capitalizing on opportunities in competitive tournaments.
