Togo coach Kayi Tomety blames missed chances for elimination from 2026 Women’s AFCON
Togo’s women’s national team failed to overturn their deficit against Burkina Faso, suffering a 1-0 defeat at the Kégué Stadium in Lomé on Tuesday.
The result confirmed their exit from the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers after losing 3-0 on aggregate.
Despite showing determination, the Eperviers could not find the attacking sharpness needed to challenge a disciplined Burkinabè side.
Their coach, Kayi Tomety, admitted her players struggled to break down a well-organised defence and lacked precision in front of goal.
Speaking after the match, Tomety explained the tactical setup aimed at recovering from the two-goal deficit from the first leg.
“We set up a formation and attacking structure to come back from the first-leg loss. But we faced a compact, disciplined, and focused defence that limited our attacking flow,” she said.
Tomety noted that her team worked hard to control the midfield and create chances but often failed to make them count.
“We strengthened the midfield to win the battle there, but our forwards received the ball with their backs to goal.
That forced us to play backward against a defence that stayed deep and defended aggressively,” she added.
Reflecting on the two-leg tie, Tomety expressed frustration at her team’s lack of efficiency. “Across both matches, we had opportunities.
If we had been more clinical, we could have changed the outcome. Burkina Faso did not completely dominate us, but we lacked effectiveness,” she said.
The defeat ends Togo’s journey in the 2026 Women’s AFCON qualifiers and leaves the team looking ahead to rebuilding for future competitions.
Tomety, who guided Togo to their first-ever AFCON appearance in 2022, will now focus on strengthening the team’s attack to ensure better results in the next cycle.
