Burnley scouts monitor Karim Coulibaly during Werder Bremen’s win over Union Berlin
Burnley have stepped up their interest in highly-rated French-born Congolese defender Karim Coulibaly, sending scouts to monitor the teenager during Werder Bremen’s 1-0 win over Union Berlin on Saturday.
The 18-year-old centre-back has emerged as one of the Bundesliga’s standout young prospects after being thrust into the first team due to a series of injuries in the Werder Bremen squad.
Coulibaly seized the opportunity, delivering a commanding performance in defence to help his side secure a crucial clean sheet and victory on Matchday 8.
According to reports from German outlet Bild, Coulibaly was under close observation, not only by his father and agent Nochi Hamazor, but also by Burnley scout Anri Kaca, who was present at the stadium to assess the youngster’s performance firsthand. The Premier League club is said to be very interested in the teenager as they look to reinforce their defensive line with young, high-potential talent.
The interest in Coulibaly extends beyond Burnley. As per the report, top clubs from England, Italy, and Portugal are also monitoring his progress closely.
However, any potential move may prove challenging, as the defender is tied to a long-term contract with Werder Bremen until 2029 and does not have a release clause.
With his composure, physical presence, and maturity beyond his years, Coulibaly is quickly becoming one of Europe’s most-watched young defenders.
A move to a bigger club is reportedly set to happen sooner rather than later.
