2026 WAFCON qualifiers: winning 3-0 is amazing – Kim Lars hails Black Queens’ victory over Egypt
Ghana Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren has expressed his satisfaction following his team’s emphatic 3-0 victory over Egypt in the first leg of the 2026 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifiers.
The match, played on Thursday in Ismailia, saw the Black Queens dominate from start to finish. Star forward Doris Boaduwaa opened the scoring in the 42nd minute, giving Ghana a deserved lead heading into halftime.
Egypt were reduced to 10 players in the 52nd minute when Habiba Essam Mohammed was shown a red card for a reckless challenge on Grace Asantewaa.
Ghana capitalised on their advantage in the latter stages of the game. Substitute Mary Amponsah doubled the lead in the 85th minute with a composed finish, before Grace Asantewaa sealed the victory deep into stoppage time with a stunning goal.
Speaking after the match, Coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren described the win as “amazing,” emphasising the difficulty of playing away from home.
“You can see that we haven’t been together for a while. It doesn’t connect like it did a couple of months ago. But the energy was there, I believe that we did a lot of good things, and in the end, we did well. In the end, a difficult away game—we won 3-0. The result is amazing. It puts us in a good position to make sure that we make the next AFCON,” Bjorkegren said.
The Black Queens are expected to return to Ghana on Friday to begin preparations for the second leg in Accra on October 28.
