South Africa forward Cassius Mailula sees KV Kortrijk move as a stepping stone
South Africa international Cassius Mailula says his move to Belgian outfit KV Kortrijk is a good stepping stone for him to attain greater heights of his career.
Mailula arrived in Belgium to begin his career at KV Kortrijk last week after switching from the Major League Soccer, where he featured for Toronto FC.
During his spell with the MLS side, the South African attacker was farmed out on loan, featuring for Wydad Casablanca last season.
With his wealth of experience, the forward is expected to play a huge role for Kortrijk in the Belgian Jupiler Pro League.
“It is my dream that I want to play for a big club in Europe,” he said to the Kortrijk television having arrived last weekend. “This is a good stepping stone for me to take my career to the higher level.”
His parent club, FC Toronto, are not keen on losing him as yet given the loan stays they send him on.
But in truth, Mailula’s career in the US has not taken off to great heights it was on while he was still at Mamelodi Sundowns.
Cassius Mailula made the move to Toronto from Mamelodi Sundowns in 2023 for €1.5 million.
Last season, Mailula played on loan at Moroccan club Wydad, where he featured in 36 matches, scoring 6 goals and providing 7 assists. He was part of the squad that featured at the FIFA Club World Cup tournament in the USA.
The 24-year-old has made just two appearances for the South African national team since making his debut in 2023.
