Nigeria: Quick-thinking pilot saves Super Eagles From mid-air scare in Angola
Nigeria’s national football team, the Super Eagles, escaped a serious scare on Saturday when their chartered plane was forced to make an emergency landing in Luanda, Angola, after a crack appeared on the aircraft’s windshield mid-flight.
The incident occurred as the team was returning from Polokwane, South Africa, following their 2-1 win over Lesotho in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
The squad was en route to Uyo, where they are set to host Benin in a decisive fixture that could determine their qualification hopes.
According to reports, the ValueJet aircraft had made a scheduled refuelling stop in Luanda before continuing its journey.
Around 25 minutes after take-off, a loud crack was heard in the cockpit as the windshield began to fracture.
The pilot immediately initiated an emergency U-turn and successfully landed the plane back at Luanda airport.
All passengers on board — including players, technical staff, and government officials — disembarked safely, with no injuries reported.
In a statement confirming the incident, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) praised the crew for their professionalism and calm response.
The aircraft suffered a windshield crack mid-air after takeoff, and the pilot did the right thing in guiding the aircraft safely to Luanda airport,” the federation said.
The same ValueJet plane had earlier transported part of the Super Eagles delegation to South Africa earlier in the week.
Following the emergency landing, the NFF quickly arranged for an alternative aircraft to transport the team to Nigeria.
The delegation eventually arrived safely in Uyo early Sunday morning.

The focus now shifts back to the pitch, where Nigeria faces a crucial final group-stage match against Benin on Tuesday.
To secure a place at the 2026 World Cup, the Super Eagles must win by at least two goals and hope South Africa fails to beat Rwanda in the other Group C fixture.

Head coach Eric Chelle, along with key players Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman, will be under pressure to deliver a decisive result after a turbulent journey that could have ended in tragedy.
The emergency landing has added unexpected drama to what is already a high-stakes qualifying campaign.
For now, relief outweighs concern as the team prepares to resume training in Uyo — thankful that quick thinking in the cockpit ensured every member of the delegation landed safely.
