French-Congolese forward Eliezer Mayenda commits future to Sunderland with long-term contract
Sunderland AFC have confirmed that striker Eliezer Mayenda has signed a new long-term contract, securing his services until 2030.
The announcement comes just days after Chelsea forward Marc Guiu joined the Black Cats on loan, adding to the club’s preparations for the Premier League campaign.
Born in France to Congolese and Togolese parents, the 20-year-old was instrumental in Sunderland’s promotion push last season.
His performances included two crucial goals in the play-offs against Coventry City and Sheffield United, along with a tally of 10 goals and five assists across the campaign.
Manager Régis Le Bris was eager to tie him down as part of his core squad for the top-flight challenge ahead.
Mayenda expressed pride in extending his stay at the Stadium of Light, describing Sunderland as “my team, my Club, my city” and praising the fans as “very, very special.”
He said playing in front of the home crowd was “always incredible” and urged them to keep supporting the team with the same passion.
Sporting director Kristjaan Speakman welcomed the agreement, hailing the forward’s growth over the past two years.
He described Mayenda as a “great character who understands our Club” and stressed that his commitment would be vital in Sunderland’s efforts to remain in the Premier League.
Speakman added that while the contract renewal was a moment to celebrate, it also marked a reset in objectives as the team looks to establish itself among England’s elite.
He said the forward’s development had been “immensely rewarding” for supporters, staff, and teammates alike, and expressed confidence that the fan base would be delighted by the news.
