Olympique Marseille manager Roberto De Zerbi has described the signing of Angel Gomes as one of sporting director Mehdi Benatia’s standout transfer moves this summer.
Gomes, who is of Angolan descent, joined the French club on a free transfer from Lille after his contract expired.
The former Manchester United academy graduate has been identified as a key addition to Marseille’s midfield, alongside defender CJ Egan-Riley, who arrived from Burnley.
Speaking to L’Équipe, De Zerbi expressed satisfaction with the club’s transfer activity, despite ongoing business.
“We still have a lot to do, but I’m happy with the transfer market,” he said. “We’ve signed two talented youngsters, Egan-Riley and Gomes, who are two of Benatia’s masterpieces.”
The 23-year-old Gomes made over 80 appearances for Lille after leaving United in 2020 and has been widely praised for his technical skill, versatility, and creativity.
His move to Marseille is expected to offer De Zerbi more attacking depth and control in midfield as the club looks to improve on last season’s Ligue 1 performance.
De Zerbi also confirmed that midfielder Adrien Rabiot received significant transfer offers but decided against a departure.
“Rabiot has received very interesting offers but has chosen not to consider them,” the Italian coach revealed.
