French-Senegalese Mamadou Sarr outlines Chelsea ambition with focus on hard work and development

New Chelsea signing Mamadou Sarr has outlined his ambitions at the club, stressing his commitment to development and hard work as he begins life with the Blues.

The 18-year-old centre-back, who is of Senegalese heritage, joined Chelsea last week from their Ligue 1 affiliate club Strasbourg and is currently with the squad at the FIFA Club World Cup.

Speaking to reporters in Atlanta, Sarr said the move represents the realisation of a childhood dream and an opportunity to grow at the highest level.

“When I was a kid, I had a dream,” he said. “It was to be the best centre back in the world.” Inspired by Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk, whom he described as a leader, Sarr added, “Some people tell me I play like Ibrahima Konaté.”

Sarr made the switch to Strasbourg from Lyon just a year ago but quickly emerged as one of the most promising young defenders in France. Interest from Chelsea began to build in late 2024, culminating in a permanent transfer to Stamford Bridge in July.

“I joined Strasbourg to play for Strasbourg. I knew of some interest in November, December. Then in January, I had an idea that it was possible,” he recalled. “When one of the biggest clubs comes to you, it is so exciting.”

Sarr says Chelsea directors made their expectations clear during contract discussions: “To progress. To work hard, work hard, work hard.”

He believes the pathway at the club offers him the structure to succeed. “It’s very important to me – to train very well, to speak with the coach, to speak with every player, and to be confident in what I do.”
