Manchester City challenge Tottenham for Cody Gakpo

Tottenham Hotspur had appeared to be leading the race for Cody Gakpo, but Manchester City have now emerged as serious competition for the Liverpool forward.

The Dutch international has reportedly already reached an agreement on personal terms with Spurs, although Tottenham’s opening offer of around €70 million was rejected. Liverpool have recently placed an €85 million valuation on the 27-year-old.

According to reports from soccernews.nl, City have registered their interest in Gakpo. Fabrizio Romano has also reported direct contact between Manchester City and the player’s representatives, suggesting that the situation could change quickly before the transfer deadline.

Liverpool are not planning to release Gakpo without first strengthening their own attack. Romano reports that the Reds would only approve his departure if they sign two wingers before September 1. Their priority remains Paris Saint-Germain’s Bradley Barcola, while Liverpool have reportedly agreed personal terms with his teammate Ibrahim Mbaye.

However, negotiations between Liverpool and PSG over Mbaye are not yet complete. That uncertainty could delay Gakpo’s transfer and give Manchester City or Tottenham more time to improve their proposals.

Gakpo’s next destination is therefore still unclear, with the final days of the window likely to decide whether he moves to north London, Manchester or stays at Anfield.
