Malian left-back Soumaïla Magassouba has reached a full agreement to join Moldovan champions Sheriff Tiraspol after a proposed move to Sharjah FC collapsed.
The 21-year-old, currently playing for Stade Malien, is set to travel to Moldova on Sunday, March 2, 2025, to complete a medical before signing a three-year contract.
Sharjah move abandoned, new opportunity in Moldova
Magassouba had been expected to sign for Sharjah FC in the United Arab Emirates, but the deal fell apart due to disagreements over the terms of the transfer.
Instead, the promising defender has secured a move to Sheriff Tiraspol, a club renowned for its dominance in Moldovan football and its regular participation in European competitions.
Trained at Étoiles du Mandé before a brief stint with Guerrier du Mandé, Magassouba has spent this season on loan at Stade Malien.
His performances in the CAF Champions League, where he scored one goal in seven matches, caught the attention of scouts, leading to interest from multiple clubs.
Speaking about his imminent transfer, Magassouba expressed his excitement about the next step in his career.
“Yes, that is absolutely true. Inshallah, I have received my plane ticket and I am about to leave this Sunday for a new adventure in Moldova. I would greatly appreciate your support and blessings to make everything go as planned, inshallah.”
A new challenge in European football
Sheriff Tiraspol, the most successful club in Moldova, has gained recognition for its strong performances in European competitions, including a famous victory over Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League.
For Magassouba, the move represents a significant step forward as he looks to establish himself in European football.
The young defender has also been part of Mali’s local national team, featuring in the qualifiers for the African Nations Championship (CHAN).
His versatility, defensive ability, and attacking contributions from the left flank make him a valuable addition to Sheriff’s squad.
With his arrival in Moldova imminent, Magassouba will be eager to impress and continue his development at a club known for nurturing talent.
His journey from Malian domestic football to European competition marks an important milestone, and all eyes will be on how he adapts to this new challenge.
